AIMEE HOVING

Born in Belgium in 1978, Hoving has lived in Geneva since childhood. After graduating in visual communication and photography from the École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ECAL), she received the Swiss Design Award, presented to young talent specializing in modern design, in 2004. The locations in her works, bearing traces of both cultures where she was born and raised, represent familiar places or scenes from the artist’s childhood memories. The use of emptiness in the artist’s works sometimes makes you feel like you’re looking at a painting rather than a photographic image.

Drawing inspiration from her daughter Flavia, whom she uses as a model, we witness places through the eyes of a child, starting from the familiar, desired, or dreamed; her compositions transform into narratives we wander through like old memories. Flavia occupies another critical role in her mother’s widely praised work: she names the pieces. Although Hoving often portrays disturbing, strange dreams, her work also reflects childlike joy. Fantastic images of childhood, the ambiguous distinction between reality and fiction, woven with softened fears, reflect the artist’s world; for example, faces hidden behind masks, an endless game of ‘hide and seek,’ a mysterious theater that oscillates between the ordinary and the terrifying.
