LORENZO VITTURI
Lorenzo Vitturi is a photographer and sculptor based in London. Formerly a cinema set painter, Vitturi has brought this experience into his photographic practice, which revolves around site-specific interventions at the intersection of photography, sculpture, and performance. According to Vitturi, photography is a playground that allows him to merge different disciplines to reflect the complexity of changing urban environments. Vitturi has had solo exhibitions at the FOAM Museum in Amsterdam, The Photographers’ Gallery in London, the Contact Photography Festival in Toronto, and the Center National de l’Audiovisuel in Luxembourg. He published his photography series, ‘Dalston Anatomy’ as a book in 2013. His latest photo book ‘Money Must Be Made’ was published by SPBH Editions in September 2017.
In the Money Must Be Made selection, Vitturi focuses on Balogun Market in Lagos, Nigeria, one of the largest street markets in the world, a dizzying world frequented by tens of thousands of people every day. Vitturi combines different disciplines as he closely follows the city as it transforms. This project opens the door to an unusual story of spatial resistance due to globalization, colonialism, and capitalism. The distinctive reality explored by Vitturi’s lens is exemplified by the contrast between the festival-like climate of the region and the eerie void left behind by the abandoned twenty-seven-floor Financial Center in the center of the market.
