Anonymous Women
In her long-running Anonymous Women series, Patty Carroll explores the lives of women who hoard all their dreams in their homes and become lost in the meanings attached to objects.
Patty Carroll is a photographer who first gained recognition in the 70s. She taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Royal College of Art in London, and the University of Michigan. In addition to a monograph of the Anonymous Women series, she has published The World of Elvis Tribute Artists, featuring impersonators of ‘The King’ and Man Bites Dog: Hot Dog Culture, a vibrant impression of Americana culture.
The three comprehensive chapters of Anonymous Women provide a creative playground for Carroll, where she has built an impressive collection of iconic photographs over the last two decades. Carroll began this series as an uprising against her career being overshadowed by the shifting balance of family and work when she moved from Chicago to London. The photographs depict snapshots from the oppressive world of women, surrounded by plaid curtains, patterned wallpapers, crystal vases, and shag carpets. Carroll creates a dark and humorous hide-and-seek scenario between the viewer and the anonymous woman by concealing the models within dense layers of clutter. The women, swallowed by these spaces, become portraits embedded in an illusory order where objects determine value.
