Another America
Phillip Toledano defines himself as a conceptual artist. He has worked for many years in various fields, such as photography, installation, painting, and video.
As the child of a French Moroccan mother and an American father, Phillip Toledano grew up in London and Casablanca and is now based in New York. The artist produces elaborate dystopian images using manipulation techniques that also bear traces of his multicultural background.
Phillip Toledano has started using artificial intelligence in his recent works to examine technology in terms of content and practice and question historical facts as they lose their legitimacy. His latest series, ‘Another America,’ also published as a book, utilises artificial intelligence not as a current insight but as a tool to explore the potential of the interaction between technology and art. According to Toledano, artificial intelligence is ‘like working with a very talented and very drunk person,’ emphasising the unpredictability and randomness of the results, which he considers integral to the project. The series features images reminiscent of a blurry past, creating a dark and simple world with compelling narratives in each frame.
Toledano focuses on events and figures in the compositions, exploring how the past is remembered and given meaning at both individual and collective levels. He moves towards the future while continuing to examine a vague and inaccessible past.
