''Five Dragons'' & ''Chasing Clouds''
Yang Yongliang, originally from Shanghai’s Jiading district, combines his early education in traditional Chinese painting with a modern, multidisciplinary approach to art. After graduating from the Institute of Design at the China Academy of Art in the early 2000s, Yongliang began experimenting with digital designs that reinterpret classical Chinese landscapes. His work merges ancient artistic techniques with contemporary digital media, reflecting the duality of his life, which he spends between Shanghai and New York. His art has gained international recognition and has been showcased at prestigious institutions such as the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris.
In the fairytale-like series that includes the videos Five Dragons and Chasing Clouds, Yongliang seeks to revive cultural and historical narratives through his work. Drawing on classical Chinese mythology, Yongliang brings to life the ancient symbolism of dragons, which were traditionally regarded as water gods tasked with protecting nature and watching over the oceans. While dragons are now widely seen as symbols of good luck in popular Chinese culture, Yongliang pays homage to their deeper meaning by revisiting their significance to the people of the past. In his series, the dragons are not just symbolic figures; they become integral parts of the landscape, creating a poetic flow within the scenes. They blend seamlessly into nature, appearing to peer over hills and emerge from clouds, evoking a dreamlike, mythical quality.
