Genesis
Sebastião Salgado has left a remarkable legacy through his dedication to humanity and nature, planting millions of trees and amassing a monumental archive of 500,000 photographs. Over the past 51 years, he has travelled extensively, capturing what he calls ‘photographs of the world’. He also participates in environmental conservation through Instituto Terra, working on regenerating deforested areas and restoring scarred landscapes. Salgado stands as one of the most significant photographers of our time, with his work and advocacy leaving a profound impact.
Salgado’s commitment to recreation and regeneration stems from his early life struggles. Born in rural Brazil, his family fled to Paris during the political turmoil of the 1960s. The iconic Magnum Photos photojournalist’s early independent series focused on workers and immigrants, portraying the everyday realities of disadvantaged communities and celebrating the triumphs of democracy and freedom.
In his more recent works, Salgado focuses on his connection with nature, embarking on a journey to explore the origins of our planet. Is there anywhere in the world untouched by humans? After eight years of research, the Genesis series presents Salgado’s quest to find places on Earth that remain unchanged, safe from the pace of modern life. Curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado, the series spans five geographical regions, capturing wildlife, landforms, dense forests, raging seas, and isolated communities.
