Nick Brandt is an artist who has earned global acclaim with his innovative narrative in nature photography. The artist got a degree in art in London before starting his professional career as a director in the USA. Since the beginning of the 2000s, Brandt has embarked on a mission to raise environmental awareness by focusing his lens on the climate crisis. This year’s edition of the festival is pleased to present the artist’s The Day May Break I – II series, an ongoing global project that started during the pandemic. Travelling to conservation areas in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Bolivia, the photo series focuses on displaced people and animals due to environmental degradation. Convinced that reality is significantly better than imagination, Brandt approaches this series with open and experimental methods but no specific direction. In the random flow of the shoots, people and animals appear in the frame in surprisingly similar ways. There is plenty to discuss about the solidarity of victims and the sense of sympathy swirling in the mists. The images are shocking enough to take the viewer out of their comfort zone and make them think seriously about this black-and-white world.
