UNFINISHED SPACES

Alysa Nahmias & Benjamin Murray

Fidel Castro and Che Guevara once appointed three architects to Havana to oversee the National Art Schools project. Construction of the complex started on an old golf course with a unique architectural and design perspective, yet unfortunately, it was never completed due to the political climate of the period. However, parts of the campus were still used by artists in that half-finished condition. Unfinished Spaces tells the story of the place during the Cuban Revolution and how Castro decided to complete the project 40 years later. Supported by comprehensive archive footage, the documentary features interviews with the architects Ricardo Porro, Roberto Gottardi, and Vittorio Garatti about the intended architectural style and why the project was abandoned.
