Step into the roots of photography with this immersive workshop dedicated to the analogue art of box camera photography. Entirely mechanical and independent of electricity, the box camera functions as both a camera and a darkroom. Participants will learn the fundamentals of this unique process while shooting and developing their own black-and-white prints directly inside the device—each one a handmade, one-of-a-kind image.
Led by Austrian photographer and researcher Lukas Birk, the workshop not only introduces the mechanics, optics, and chemistry of the box camera, but also traces its history in Turkey, where it was widely practiced from the 1910s to the 1960s. Through hands-on experience and historical context, participants gain insight into a tradition that shaped everyday photography until the late 90s.
No prior experience is necessary. By the end of the day, you’ll have the knowledge and tools to build and use your own box camera, whether for portraiture, street photography, or experimental projects. This is photography in its most elemental form—analogue, immediate, and beautifully imperfect.
