Established in 1853 through the decree of Sultan Abdülmecid I, the Ferikoy Latin Catholic Cemetery stands as one of Istanbul's most precious hidden treasures, embodying the city's multilayered history. This sacred ground serves as the final resting place of the Levantine community - those Venetian, Genoese, and Neapolitan merchant families who left an indelible mark on the city's cosmopolitan spirit for centuries. Housing the legacy of these people who served as voluntary cultural and commercial ambassadors between East and West from Byzantine times through the Ottoman era, the cemetery functions as a true open-air museum with monumental tombs of established families like Corpi, Botter, Tubini, and Glavany, alongside honor monuments dedicated to French and Italian soldiers who fell during the 1853-1856 Crimean War.
This unique organization under 212 Photography Istanbul will mark a turning point in the cemetery's history. The special tours guided by cemetery owner Rinaldo Marmara are opening this rare sanctuary - normally accessible only with special permissions - to such an event for the very first time. Enhanced by Mustafa Seven's art exhibition, the program offers an unparalleled opportunity to discover Istanbul's vanishing Levantine heritage. This organization carries not only a mission to document history but also to transmit the last witnesses of Istanbul's multinational past to future generations.
Participation is limited to 30 people.
