Established in 1853 through the decree of Sultan Abdülmecid I, the Ferikoy Latin Catholic Cemetery stands as one of Istanbul's most precious hidden treasures, embodying the city's multilayered history. This sacred ground serves as the final resting place of the Levantine community - those Venetian, Genoese, and Neapolitan merchant families who left an indelible mark on the city's cosmopolitan spirit for centuries. Housing the legacy of these people who served as voluntary cultural and commercial ambassadors between East and West from Byzantine times through the Ottoman era, the cemetery functions as a true open-air museum with monumental tombs of established families like Corpi, Botter, Tubini, and Glavany, alongside honor monuments dedicated to French and Italian soldiers who fell during the 1853-1856 Crimean War.

As part of 212 Photography Istanbul, special tours led by cemetery director and historian Rinaldo Marmara will offer access to this rare site for the very first time. Marmara is a historian specialized in the history of the Latin Catholic community in Turkey, bringing his unique perspective to this experience. Enriched by Mustafa Seven’s exhibition, the program offers a unique opportunity to explore Istanbul’s vanishing Levantine heritage. This organisation carries not only a mission to document history but also to transmit the last witnesses of Istanbul's multinational past to future generations.
