Daintree is a body of work by Australian artist Catherine Nelson, commissioned by Silky Oaks Lodge, situated on the banks of the Mossman River, neighbouring the world-famous Daintree National Park in Far North Queensland, Australia.

Rising beneath Manjal Jimalji, also known as Devil’s Thumb, the Mossman River winds eastwards through Kuku Yalanji land, home to the world’s oldest continuously surviving rainforest.

Existing somewhere between photography and painting, Daintree brings together hundreds of photographs, painted into one another to create more ‘honest’ images. Through this process, Nelson creates images that reflect her feelings and memories of this striking and unique part of the world.

Nelson’s other works in public space include Tropic, projected onto the façade of Parliament House in Canberra, Australia, in 2022, and Planet Wakehurst (2023), a large-scale outdoor installation wrapping around three façades of a historic building at Wakehurst botanical gardens in West Sussex, England.
